Prolene Hernia SystemWhat is the Prolene Hernia System? The Prolene Hernia System (PHS) is a revolutionary advance in repairing abdominal wall hernia defects. It’s suitable for the repair of most sizes of primary inguinal hernias as well as umbilical or some ventral hernias. In addition, PHS is indicated for recurrent inguinal hernia regardless of previous methods of repair. Prolene Hernia System conforms to the natural contour of the posterior space and protects the entire myopectineal orifice. The Prolene Hernia System is a three-part system made of a top onlay patch and a circular or oblong underlay patch that are connected with a hollow mesh cylinder. It’s a sterile, pre-shaped device constructed of knitted nonabsorbable polypropylene filaments. Are there any special limitations placed on the patients postoperatively? No. Hernia repair using the Prolene Hernia System is a tension-free repair that provides immediate strength and relatively less discomfort than conventional repairs. Most patients are encouraged to resume their normal activities immediately and strenuous activity as soon as their discomfort allows. Aside from typical post-anesthesia restrictions, no other limitations are placed on the patients. What type of anesthesia is required for hernia repair with the Prolene Hernia System?Hernia repair with Prolene Hernia System requires no special anesthesia. In most cases, local anesthesia with or without conscious sedation is sufficient. Less commonly, regional or general anesthesia may be used as indicated. See our section on Hernias
